Self-Love

We all do it; you aren’t alone. We all have that voice in the back of our heads that tells us constantly all the things we do wrong or the ways that we don’t measure up. It sounds like our voice but the truth is that voice belongs to someone else. To those who have doubted us before. To those who have said mean things that we have carried with us. It belongs to our experiences and our memories.

It also belongs to the society and culture in which we live. Let’s face it. This voice does not help us out. But this voice does fuel the capitalist system we are all willingly or unwillingly a part of. That voice that tells us we aren’t good enough sells more clothes, makeup, luxury items. It sells more gym meberships, nutrition plans, vacations, and self-help books. That voice of self-criticism has a purpose – unfortunately, that purpose is not to allow us be happy, healthy, and whole. It does not allow us to be connected to one another.

The good news is that because that voice is part of us it means we are the answer. The answer is self-love. Only love can vanquish criticism. I know this sounds simple, but this it’s one of the things I find the hardest. That voice in my head is relentless. So while I’m actively trying to engage in self-love, I find it helpful to start to include new, radical voices. If you listen, you can hear them. You can hear them inside yourself, from your friends and family, from other rad folks that inspire you.

Where do I often look? Instagram, of course. I’ve collected for you some of my favourite posts that have taught me how to love myself. And as a result feel connected and whole. Enjoy! Sometimes a picture is all you need!
