Shift Spotlight: Vivian Zhang

Vivian is a social worker and clinical therapist who focuses on supporting clients through the changes and challenges of life. She provides a safe, comfortable, and non-judgmental space to share and explore patterns which may be holding us back.

This week we sat down with Vivian to learn more about her therapeutic approach and to further explore just what she loves most about therapy!

What's one thing you love about therapy?

It's really hard to just choose one thing that I love about therapy. Therapy itself is a process and I'm always honoured to have people come into the therapy space willing to try out this process with me. If I have to choose one thing, I suppose I find the people who come into therapy to see me to be that one thing that I love. Their tenacity, curiosity, resilience, strength, and compassion for others is always surprising because I wish they could see this for themselves from where I sit.

How would you describe your therapy style?

My catch phrase therapy wise would be "buckle in, we're going on a time traveling adventure". I like to be in the space with others that is according to their pace. I let my clients guide me to what they want to work on. I want to make sure that anyone who comes into the therapy space with me feels comfortable, respected, and open to explore what's going on. We will work together to find answers and I'll guide you with the strategies and tools that might be helpful to help you through those stuck points in life. It is a non-judgmental space where I hope my client feels confident to experiment with skills and strategies that they don't feel ready to try out in the outside world.

What's one place you'd love to travel to and why?

Thailand! I am obsessed with food and Thai cooking has the most unique flavours I've ever experienced. It can be an eclectic mouthful of sweet, sour, tangy, and spicy. I love that. It's very much like my own approach with therapy and life; to incorporate a bit of everything with a focus on our strengths and experiences with a dash of new strategies and skills to help guide us through the challenges we might be experiencing.
