Shirley's Approach

Hello, my name is Shirley Hung, I am a Registered Social Worker. I have over 5 years of experience providing individual and couple therapy to a diverse population in Toronto.  I love the work that I do; I believe that we all have the capacity for personal growth and change, and I feel honored to help my clients on their journey toself-discovery.

Seeking therapy takes a lot of courage and is a wise choice to care for yourself.  Research has shown that therapy is most effective when the client feels safe and has a strong connection with their therapist. My aim is to provide a safe and compassionateenvironment for you to come, process whatever you’re working through together with me. I will help you feel more hopeful, develop more self-awareness including your internal strengths and resources, and increase your sense of well-being so that you can become your best self. For couples, you will learn to reconnect with one another and build a more secure emotional bond. You are the expert on yourself and your experiences.  I start where you are at, and respect the pace you need to make meaningful changes in your life.

While I would describe my therapeutic approach as eclectic, my work is primarily informed by person-centered, strength-based, and attachment theory. I take a holistic view of the health of the body, mind and soul. I draw on my trainings from various therapeutic frameworks: Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT), Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and mindfulness approaches.  My clinical work is also informed by Anti-Oppressive and LGBTQ-Positive frameworks. I enjoy working with clients from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, and with various sexual orientations. It is important for me to tailor my therapeutic approach to your needs and strengths.

I have extensive experience providing direct counselling services to individuals and couples. I provided mental health assessment, counselling, and crisis intervention to patients experiencing complex medical conditions and chronic illness through my role as a Social Worker at St. Michael’s Hospital and SickKids (Hospital for Sick Children). As a Counsellor at the student counselling centres at University of Toronto and York University, I provided psychotherapy, developed wellness workshops, and provided consultations to faculty and staff. In addition, I also provided supportive counselling and employment support to at-risk and homeless youth as an Employment Counsellor.

To be a client is to be in a vulnerable place. Like many of my colleagues in the psychotherapy field, I have spent some time in the client’s chair. I am mindful of this sense of vulnerability and strive to make the therapy experience a helpful and positive one for you.

I see tremendous beauty in therapy. I feel honoured to journey with my clients and to witness how their personal strengths transform into incredible growth.
