CURRENT CLIENT? BOOK NOW

Online therapy at Shift Collab uses secure video with the same clinical standards you would expect from regulated professionals in person. It is a strong option if you want registered clinicians, thoughtful matching, and care from wherever you are in Canada with a private internet connection.
You might be reading this at 11pm with a laptop on your chest, or on a lunch break you're pretending is a walk. Either way, being here says something. Maybe you've tried therapy before and it didn't land. Maybe you've never tried and you're not sure you qualify for something so official-sounding. Or maybe you're mostly fine, and you'd like to stay that way with a little more support than you currently have.
Ready to get matched? Start the short questionnaire and meet your Care Team. We cannot wait to meet you.

Strip away the language and online therapy is a fairly simple thing: you and a regulated clinician, meeting over secure video, doing the work of therapy. Same hour, same conversation, same clinical standards. What changes is where you sit for it - your kitchen table, a parked car, an office with the door closed - and what that makes possible. No commute across the city, no waiting room with a magazine from 2019, no explaining to a receptionist why you're there. For a lot of people, that's the difference between attending a session and not attending one at all.
What makes virtual care clinically legitimate isn't the platform; it's the professional behind it. Your therapist is registered with a provincial regulator and accountable to that college's standards of practice, continuing education, and complaints process. The evidence has been building for years, too: Canada's drug and health technology agency reviewed the literature in 2025 and found virtual mental health counselling broadly comparable to in-person care for depression, several anxiety disorders, and PTSD, and a McMaster rapid review reached much the same conclusion. You can read the CADTH review yourself if you like your reassurance with footnotes.
Where virtual therapy gets shakier has nothing to do with the technology. It's fit. A therapist who is technically capable but emotionally mismatched will cost you money, momentum, and nerve. That's the problem the rest of this page is built around.
Some virtual offerings are worksheets. Some are AI. Some are a chat window that goes quiet at 5pm. Those have their uses, and none of them are this. What you get here is a person with a name, a registration, and a memory of last week - someone who expects to see you next week. If you've ever used something that felt like the vending-machine version of therapy, the difference shows up in the first ten minutes.
Online counselling in Canada suits people whose lives are full and whose calendars are unforgiving. If you're carrying a lot and performing competence all day, the hour you'd otherwise lose to travel is often the hour that decides whether you go at all. Parents without childcare, people who work shifts, students between classes, caregivers who can't leave the house on a reliable schedule - the format meets them where they already are.
It also suits people whose local options are thin. If you live in a smaller city, a rural community, or somewhere the waitlist is measured in seasons, virtual therapy widens the pool from "who's nearby" to "who's actually right." That matters more than most people expect when you're looking for a therapist online in Canada with a specific background - someone who understands your culture, your faith, your family's expectations, or what it's like to be queer in a small town.
Then there's the quieter group: people who've done therapy before and want to continue without the friction, and people who want targeted help with something specific. Much of the online anxiety therapy in Canada that people go looking for is exactly this - support for a worry that has become a schedule, a body that stays braced, a mind that won't stand down at night. Anxiety, depression, burnout, grief, ADHD, relationship strain, big transitions: these are the everyday reasons people come to us, and none of them are too small a reason to start.
We'd rather say this out loud than pretend otherwise. If you're in acute crisis, actively unsafe, or need medication management from a psychiatrist, you need a different level of care than a weekly hour of psychotherapy, and we'll point you toward it. And if you know from experience that you do your best work sitting across from someone in a room, that's real information, not a failure. Virtual therapy is a format, not a moral upgrade.
Every clinician here holds a regulated designation, and the two you'll see most often tell you something worth understanding before your first receipt.
RSW stands for Registered Social Worker. Social work is regulated in every Canadian province and territory, which means the title is protected and the person using it is accountable to a college with a formal complaints process. The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers sets out what registration requires: a recognized degree, supervised practice, and ongoing conditions to stay in good standing. Many RSWs hold a Master of Social Work and practise psychotherapy within their competence.
RP stands for Registered Psychotherapist, a protected title in Ontario held by registrants of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. CRPO's own guidance is clear that only registrants may use the title, and that psychotherapy itself is a controlled act performed by trained, supervised clinicians. In Quebec, psychotherapy is regulated through the Ordre des psychologues du Québec and a permit system - a different regulator, the same underlying idea.
Less than you might fear, and more than you might think. Less, because either designation can be the right clinician for your situation, and the research on therapy consistently points to the strength of the relationship between you and your therapist as the best predictor of how it goes. More, because your benefits plan may recognize one designation and not the other, and registration is what makes a receipt worth anything at all.
Roughly 2% of the people who apply to practise here are accepted, and that number is deliberate - we're a curated practice, not an open directory. We're looking for clinical skill, certainly, but also the temperament to sit with someone in a hard season without flinching or rushing them. The result is 125+ Registered Social Workers and Registered Psychotherapists, and more than 23,000 Canadians who've sat across from one of them on a screen.
Here's the part nobody enjoys, so let's do it without fog.
Postsecondary students start at $130. Adults start at $140. Most sessions land around $165, and clinicians with more seniority sit at up to $200. Reduced-rate spots are sometimes available, and it's worth asking about them, because there's no version of this where we'd rather you go without than say something out loud. Sessions typically run about 50 minutes, and your Care Team will confirm the details before you book, so nothing about your first bill is a surprise.
OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy or counselling, and neither do the equivalent plans in other provinces and territories. Publicly funded therapy does exist - through hospitals, family health teams, community agencies, and some employee assistance programs - but it runs on different waitlists and different rules, and it isn't what a private practice offers. Worth knowing so you don't spend an hour on a phone tree expecting something that was never going to be there.
Most extended health plans cover sessions with an RSW or an RP, and most cover virtual sessions the same as in-person ones. That's exactly why the designation question matters: some plans recognize both, some list only one, some require a specific master's-level credential, and some cap the annual maximum or the per-session amount. Our team is benefits-native - we deal with these plans all day - and we'll help you read yours before you commit to a schedule you can't sustain.
Log into your insurer's portal or app and search the paramedical or "mental health" section of your benefits booklet. Look for four things: which designations are listed, your annual maximum, the percentage reimbursed per visit, and whether a referral or pre-authorization is required. If any of it is unclear, call the number on your benefits card and ask directly: "Does my plan cover a Registered Social Worker or a Registered Psychotherapist for virtual psychotherapy, and what's my annual maximum?" Write down the answer and the date. That's it - you now know more about your coverage than most people ever bother to find out.
Every session comes with a receipt showing your clinician's name, designation, and registration number, which is what an insurer needs to process a claim. You submit it, they reimburse you, and most claims come back within a couple of weeks. What we can't do is promise the outcome: coverage depends on your plan and your insurer's decision, and we don't guarantee reimbursement. We'll give you everything you need to claim, and we'll tell you honestly when a plan looks unlikely to pay.
One more thing worth knowing: depending on your designation and where the service was provided, therapy may count as a medical expense on your tax return. The CRA publishes an authorized medical practitioners list that names registered or legally qualified psychotherapists in Ontario and Quebec, and you can only claim what you paid and weren't reimbursed. Worth a conversation with an accountant. Not worth a guess.
Registration in this country is provincial, which is both the annoying part and the reassuring part. Your therapist is accountable to a provincial college, and which provinces they can serve depends on that college's rules. Shift Collab is fully virtual - there's no waiting room to visit in any city - and clients join us from every province and territory. Here's roughly how it looks across the country.
Ontario. Ontario is where we started, and where most of our clinicians and clients still are. The province regulates psychotherapy through CRPO and social work through OCSWSSW, so you'll typically be matched with an RP or an RSW. Whether you're searching for online therapy in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, or Ottawa, you'll get someone who knows the local rhythm - the commute, the rent, the particular exhaustion of looking fine on paper.
Quebec. Psychotherapy here is regulated through the Ordre des psychologues du Québec and a permit system that works differently than Ontario's, and matching may weigh language alongside clinical fit. Services are available in English and French, including for online therapy in Montreal.
British Columbia. Counselling and psychotherapy don't have their own regulator in BC the way they do in Ontario, but social work does, so many BC clients work with an RSW. Online therapy in Vancouver is one of our most requested matches - unsurprising in a city where "I'm fine" is a full-time job.
Alberta. Social work is regulated here too, and demand has grown steadily. For online therapy in Calgary or online therapy in Edmonton, your Care Team matches on concern, approach, and schedule rather than postcode.
The Prairies. In Manitoba and Saskatchewan, RSWs are registered through provincial social work colleges and can provide psychotherapy within their competence. Online therapy in Winnipeg is our most common Prairie match, and Prairie clients are also our most sincere about the value of not driving anywhere in February.
Atlantic Canada. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island each regulate counselling therapy under their own frameworks - a real difference from most of the country - while Newfoundland and Labrador relies on social work registration. Online therapy in Halifax is a frequent request, and we work with clients right across the region, including the smaller communities where local options are thinnest.
The territories. Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut are places where driving to a therapist's office often isn't a real option at all. Virtual therapy isn't a convenience up there; it's the entire point, and we work with clients across the North.
If your province or territory isn't named above, ask. If we can serve you well, we will. If we can't, we'll tell you straight rather than take the booking.
You'll get a secure link before your appointment. You click it, you're in a private room with your therapist, and you talk - about the week, the thing you've been avoiding, the pattern you're starting to notice. Your therapist might ask a question you didn't expect, or sit quietly while you find the point. Some sessions you'll leave clearer. Some you'll leave tender. Both are the work.
Nothing about it is scripted and nothing about it is performed. There's no intake form to fill out for the fourth time, no clipboard, no fluorescent lights. What you say stays between you and your therapist, subject to the same confidentiality and its limits as any regulated practice - and your therapist will walk you through those limits explicitly in your first session, because you deserve to know exactly where the edges are before you decide what to share.
A few practical things: find somewhere with a door, a stable connection, and enough privacy to speak without lowering your voice. Headphones help. A glass of water helps more than you'd think. If you have to take a session from a car or on a walk, that's fine too - people do it every day, and nobody on our side is judging the backdrop.
Start with the questionnaire. It takes a few minutes, it doesn't commit you to anything, and it gives your Care Team something real to work with. From there, you'll hear back with matches. Book a free 15-minute Meet & Greet if you'd like to look before you leap, or go straight to an Initial Session if you'd rather just begin.
If you're on the fence, the fence is a fine place to stand for a day or two. But if you've read this far, something brought you here, and that's probably worth one honest conversation rather than another month of deciding which ones you actually want to carry forward. Take the questionnaire. Meet someone. See what happens next.
For many people, yes. Canada's health technology agency found virtual mental health counselling produced outcomes broadly comparable to in-person care for depression, anxiety, and PTSD. And the research on what predicts a good result keeps pointing at the same thing: the relationship. How you feel about your therapist matters more than whether you share a postcode.
Not by OHIP or any provincial plan. Many extended health benefits do cover RSW and RP sessions, including virtual ones, so check the paramedical section of your booklet. We give you receipts, we help you read your plan, and we don't guarantee reimbursement - your insurer decides, not us.
Both are regulated clinicians. RSW is a Registered Social Worker, regulated by a provincial social work college in every province and territory. RP is a Registered Psychotherapist, a protected title in Ontario held through CRPO, and Quebec regulates psychotherapy through a permit system. Both can do excellent therapy; the letters mostly matter for your benefits plan.
Many clients complete the questionnaire, meet a match, and hold a first session within a week or two. Timing depends on your availability, what you're bringing, and who has room - and it's usually faster than most people assume.
Tell us and we'll rematch you. Under our Fit Guarantee, if it isn't the right fit within 30 days of your Initial Session, we'll find you someone else. No awkward breakup speech required, and no fee to switch - you don't have to manage our feelings about it.
We're fully virtual and work with clients across Canada, so if you have a private internet connection, we can most likely see you. Because registration is provincial, your Care Team will confirm your match is properly registered for where you are. We don't offer in-person therapy, in any province.
Most extended plans pay, but we won't pretend it's universal. Submit your receipt - it carries your clinician's designation and registration number - and your insurer decides. If a claim comes back denied, we'll help you work out why, and whether seeing a clinician with a different designation would change the answer.
Sessions typically run about 50 minutes. Most people start weekly, which is where momentum builds, then move to biweekly or monthly as things steady. There's no contract and no minimum - you and your therapist settle the rhythm together, and it can change when your life does.
Yes. The Fit Guarantee covers the first 30 days after your Initial Session, but it isn't a one-time offer that expires with your goodwill. Life changes, and so do needs. If you want a different approach, a different specialty, or a different person, ask - switching isn't a complaint about anyone. It's you paying attention.
Possibly. The CRA recognizes registered or legally qualified psychotherapists in Ontario and Quebec on its authorized medical practitioners list, and you can claim amounts you paid and weren't reimbursed. Keep your receipts, check the list for your province, and ask an accountant who does this all day.
Most people land in DIY directories, marketplaces, mega telehealth, or free networks. Those can work for someone else. They often leave you doing the homework of finding a therapist who can keep up with your life.
A curated Canadian group practice for people who want excellence without browse homework. Registered Social Workers and Registered Psychotherapists, real Care Team matching, a free Meet & Greet, and a Fit Guarantee if it is not a fit.
You shouldn't have to do the homework after a long day. We're benefits-native. If it isn't a fit within 30 days of your Initial Session, we'll rematch you. Care that can stay with you across life chapters.
