Depression in men often gets missed because it does not always look like sadness. It can show up as irritability, withdrawal, working constantly to avoid feeling anything, or a flatness that is easy to write off as being tired. If you are having thoughts of suicide or feel like there is no way through right now, please call 911, or call or text 988, the 9-8-8: Suicide Crisis Helpline.
Once you are safe, therapy can help you make sense of what is underneath the exhaustion or the anger, without the pressure to have it figured out or to perform being fine. Men are statistically less likely to reach out for support and more likely to die by suicide, so bringing this to a therapist is not a small thing to do. It is a significant one.
