Dissociation and Numbness

Dissociation and emotional numbness can be hard to describe to someone who hasn't experienced them. You might feel like you're watching your life from a slight distance, going through the motions without quite being present, or noticing that emotions that should be there simply aren't. For many people, this is the nervous system doing what it knows how to do when things have felt like too much.

In therapy, the work involves gently exploring what's underneath the disconnection, without forcing anything before you're ready. You'll develop a better understanding of when and why you tend to check out, and learn ways to come back into your body and your present experience at a pace that feels manageable. Over time, the goal is to feel more like yourself again, which often means rebuilding a sense of groundedness from the inside out.
