Emotional Literacy

Emotional literacy is the ability to notice what you're feeling, name it accurately, and do something useful with that information. It sounds straightforward, but for many people it's never been taught or modelled. You might find yourself reacting strongly without understanding why, feeling numb when you'd expect to feel something, or struggling to put words to what's going on inside.

Working on emotional literacy in therapy involves learning to pay attention to your inner experience rather than bypassing it. You'll develop a richer vocabulary for your feelings, begin to understand what your emotional responses are telling you, and find more effective ways to communicate and regulate. Over time, this shifts how you relate to yourself and how you show up in the relationships that matter most.
