Relationship with Food and Body

Restrictive Eating or ARFID

For some people, eating is complicated not because of body image concerns, but because of deep sensitivity to the texture, smell, appearance, or unpredictability of food. If you find yourself eating a narrow range of foods and feeling genuine distress at the prospect of trying something outside that range, you've likely encountered a lot of frustration from people who see it as a preference you could change if you tried hard enough.

Therapy can help you work through the anxiety and avoidance that makes eating so difficult, at a pace that's realistic and doesn't make things worse. Whether the challenge is sensory sensitivity, fear of a negative physical reaction, or a limited diet that's affecting your health or social life, working with a therapist means starting from where you actually are, not some idealized place you're supposed to reach by sheer will.
