Skin picking, also known as excoriation disorder, is a mental health condition where individuals repeatedly pick at their skin, leading to noticeable damage and distress. This behaviour often serves as a coping mechanism for anxiety or stress, providing temporary relief but ultimately resulting in physical and emotional harm. In therapy, we focus on helping clients understand the triggers that lead to skin picking and explore underlying emotional issues that may be contributing to the behaviour. Through talk therapy, clients can develop healthier coping strategies and learn mindfulness techniques to manage urges. Skill-building exercises may include developing alternative behaviours, setting realistic goals for reducing skin picking, and enhancing self-awareness. Our approach is compassionate and tailored to each individual, providing a safe space for healing and recovery.
