FAQs
How do you match me with a therapist?
Start with our quick matching questionnaire. You’ll share a few details about yourself, like your location, age, the type of therapy you’re looking for (individual, couples, family, EMDR), what kind of therapist you’d prefer, and what you’d like support with.
Behind the scenes, we compare your responses across 100+ data points to find the best possible therapist match. Then our Care Team (real people, not bots) reviews your answers and handpicks your top therapist matches. You can also share preferences like cultural background, language, age, or shared faith.
Not sure yet? You can book a free 15-minute consultation with a therapist before your first session.
How much does therapy cost? Do you accept benefits?
Our session rates vary depending on the type of therapy and your therapist’s experience and credentials:
Individual & Adolescent (12+): $165–$200 per 50-minute session
Couples: $180–$220 per 50-minute session ($270–$330 for the 80-minute initial assessment)
Family: $200–$240 per 50-minute session ($300–$360 for the 80-minute initial assessment)
Postsecondary Students: $130 per 50-minute session
Therapy is not covered by OHIP, but many extended health benefit plans cover services provided by a Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW) or Registered Psychotherapist (RP). We collect payment after your session and send you a receipt you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. If you’re unsure about your coverage, we recommend checking with your benefits provider before your appointment.
It’s always our goal to ensure therapy is as accessible as possible. If you’re looking for reduced-rate therapy, you can select “reduced rate” in our matching questionnaire to be considered for a discounted spot if one becomes available.
Do I need to know what kind of therapy I need?
Not at all. That’s exactly what our matching questionnaire and Care Team are here for. If you’re unsure, we’ll help you find a therapist who fits your goals, needs, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy.
Many of our therapists use a mix of approaches, and together you’ll figure out what works best for you. Some common approaches include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), EMDR, mindfulness, and more. If you're curious about the differences, you can read more here.
How soon can I start therapy?
You’ll see your top therapist matches right after finishing the questionnaire. From there, you can book a free 15-minute meet and greet to get to know a therapist first, or go straight to a full session if you’re ready.
We often recommend booking a couple of meet and greets so you can get a sense of who feels like the right fit. Most people start therapy within a few days. Some even begin as soon as tomorrow.
What if I don’t click with my therapist?
Finding the right fit matters. In fact, research shows the relationship between you and your therapist is one of the most important parts of successful therapy.
That’s why we offer our Fit Guarantee. If you start therapy and don’t feel like the connection is right within the first 30 days, we’ll rematch you with a new therapist and give you your first session with them at no cost. Our goal is to help you find a therapist you truly feel comfortable with.
Am I locked in if I start?
Not at all. Therapy is your journey, and you’re never locked into anything. You’re free to book sessions at a pace that works for you. That said, many people find it helpful to start with consistent sessions at the beginning to build momentum and get the most out of the process. And if you ever feel like your therapist isn’t the right fit, our Care Team can help you find someone new.
Do you offer in-person therapy?
Shift Collab is a fully virtual clinic, which means all therapy sessions take place online by video or phone.
Many people appreciate the flexibility. You can connect with your therapist from the comfort of home and skip the time it takes to commute to and from an office.
We also know privacy can sometimes feel tricky when you’re doing therapy online. If that’s a concern, our Care Team can help you think through options, like finding a quiet space at home or taking your session while out for a walk with headphones.
